Suffruticose herbs or shrubs. Leaves sessile, opposite. Flowers in long, mostly axillary racemes. Calyx deeply divided into 4 segments. Corolla with a very short tube, rotate, 4-lobed with 1 lobe usually broader than the others. Stamens 2, epipetalous, exserted. Fruit a ± compressed capsule, at first dehiscing septifragally and then septicidally, 2-valved; each valve 2-fid.
