Tall shrub up to 2 m high. Leaves narrow-lanceolate, c. 7 cm long, irregularly toothed towards the apex, narrowed at the base into a short petiole. Flowers in dense verticillate cymes towards the ends of branches. Calyx 10-ribbed, 10-toothed; the tube 10–12 mm long at fruiting stage. Corolla orange to scarlet, 4–5 cm long, hairy; the upper lip long; the lower lip short, spreading. Coast. Garden escape naturalized near habitation. Introd. from S. Africa. Fl. spring–summer.
